COSMETOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Cosmetology: Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 39-5012.00):
Classification of Instructional Program (CIP 12.0401)

The curriculum involves 1000 hours to satisfy California state requirements. The course includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, sanitation, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing. The school delivers instruction in the form of power points, keynote, dvds, lecture, hands-on applications and role playing.

Graduates are prepared to be entry-level cosmetologists.

This course is taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

The Cosmetology Hybrid program has a distance education component consisting of 460 hours.

All courses are taught in English. The school does not offer English language services. Students must be proficient in the English language. Applicants may document proficiency using the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results.

COSMETOLOGY COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Hours: 1000 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining hours are spent in the clinic area where practical experience is gained.

COSMETOLOGY COURSE OUTLINE

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School Sacramento for the cosmetology program will be divided into six (6) designations:

  1. Core Curriculum: A 210-hour orientation, known as the Core program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral, and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, coloring, permanent waving, and chemical texture services. If enrolled in the hybrid program, up to 80 of these hours will be via distance education.
  2. Protégé Learning Experience: Your experience as a Protégé produces a smooth transition from Core student to Adaptive student. You spend 35 hours (day student) and 45 hours (night student) as a Protégé preparing you for the clinic classroom experience. If enrolled in the hybrid program, up to 15 of these hours will be via distance education.
  3. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: Your clinic time from 245 (day student) and 255 (night student) to 1000 hours will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using mini-classes, monthly worksheets, and periodic evaluations developed specifically for this monitoring progress. This is when you begin experiencing your clinic classroom education on paying clients in the clinic classroom.
  4. Classroom Learning Experience: Your classroom time from 245 (day student) and 255 (night student) to 1000 hours is divided into five (5) areas: cutting, coloring, texture, makeup, skin and nails. Each area has an instructor in the field who conducts the different specialty classes three times a week; these may include guest artists, retail, motivation, self-improvement, nail artistry, makeup, etc. Classroom Learning Experiences may also include retail, motivation, self-improvement, professional development, and attendance education which may be conducted by an instructor, non-licensed staff member or guest artist.
  5. Adaptive Curriculum: From 245 (day student) and 255 (night student) to 600 hours you will enter a new phase of specialty classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to continue building you into a confident designer. If enrolled in the hybrid program, up to 180 of these hours will be via distance education.
  6. Creative Curriculum: You will spend your last 600 hours at Paul Mitchell The School Sacramento in “high gear” by dressing, acting, and working like a true professional. You will use your own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare yourself for your future beauty industry career. If enrolled in the hybrid program, up to 180 of these hours will be via distance education.

Health and Safety: Including instruction on hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases.

Board Approved Health & Safety Course (B&P 7389(a)): Including instruction on hazardous substances, basic labor laws, and physical and sexual assault awareness.

Disinfection and Sanitation: Including instruction on disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments.

Chemical Hair Services: Including instruction on coloring, straightening, waving, bleaching, hair analysis, predisposition and strand tests, safety precautions, formula mixing, and the use of dye removers.

Hairstyling Services: Including instruction on arranging, blow drying, cleansing, curling, dressing, hair analysis, shampooing, waving, and nonchemical straightening, and hair cutting, including the use of shears, razors, electrical clippers and trimmers, and thinning shears, for wet and dry cutting.

Skin Care: Including instruction on chemical and manual facials and massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body by the use of hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in the ablation or destruction of the live tissue.

Hair Removal and Lash and Brow Beautification: Including instruction on tinting and perming eyelashes and brows and applying eyelashes to any person, and includes removing superfluous hair from the body of any person by use of depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, nonprescription chemicals, or waxing, or by the use of devices and appliances of any kind or description, except by the use of lasers or light waves, which are commonly known as rays.

Manicure and Pedicure: Including instruction on water and oil manicures, hand and arm massage, foot and ankle massage, nail analysis, and artificial nail services, including, but not limited to, acrylic, liquid and powder brush-ons, dip, tips, wraps, and repairs.

Paul Mitchell The School Sacramento offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education related employment that includes, but no limited to training in professionalism, resume’, development, job interview preparation and job search skills. These additional course are not a requirement for state licensure. No additional hours will be required to complete the additional training, and these additional courses are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 1000 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 1000-hour course:

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on each assigned theory exam.
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation test: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 75% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date.
  3. Final exam 1: This test covers an overview of all related cosmetology subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
  4. Final exam 2: The written exam covers an overview of all theory instruction, California state law, and other items covered on the state cosmetology exam. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
  5. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using the Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
  6. Distance education assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment. These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical skill assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessments.
  7. Distance education assignments: The institution will respond to student's submission of lessons, projects and or evaluations the next business day.
